What is a Medicare Advantage Plan?

A Medicare Advantage Plan (also known as Part C) is a health plan offered by private insurance companies that are approved by Medicare. These plans combine your Medicare Part A (hospital insurance) and Part B (medical insurance) into one convenient plan.

There are several types of Medicare Advantage Plans, including Health Maintenance Organizations (HMOs), Preferred Provider Organizations (PPOs), Private Fee-for-Service (PFFS) Plans, Special Needs Plans (SNPs), and Medicare Medical Savings Account (MSA) Plans.

When you enroll in a Medicare Advantage Plan, your Medicare-covered services are handled through the plan—not Original Medicare. Most plans also include Medicare prescription drug coverage (Part D).

What Do Medicare Advantage Plans Cover?

Medicare Advantage Plans are required to cover everything that Original Medicare does, with the exception of hospice care (which remains covered by Original Medicare). All plans also include emergency and urgent care coverage.

In addition to the basics, many Medicare Advantage Plans offer extra benefits such as dental, vision, hearing, fitness programs, and wellness services. Most plans also bundle in prescription drug coverage.

Keep in mind, you’ll still pay your Medicare Part B premium, and most Medicare Advantage Plans charge an additional monthly premium.

To avoid unexpected costs, you can request a written advance coverage decision to confirm whether a service is medically necessary and covered by your plan.
